At the age of 49, I was miserable with the direction my life was going!
I wasn’t happy with the way I looked or felt.
I hated my job, but I didn’t have the energy to do anything about it.
I had battled depression, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia since my teens.
It was time to make a significant change
My once active, thin body began to grow larger, no matter how much I exercised and restricted calories.
I used a credit card to finance painful liposuction to take off excess fat on my thighs and stomach.
My mid-section looked like I was eight months pregnant because I had fibroids the size of grapefruits. I had the fibroids removed surgically in a dangerous two-hour operation.
If I had been better informed, I might have saved myself the pain of surgery by treating my symptoms before they became so unmanageable.
After the surgery, I vowed to stay on a healthy diet but didn’t know how to stay off processed junk food.
I went on a raw foods diet and got rail-thin very quickly, but it wasn’t sustainable long term for me.
In a few years, I was 80 pounds heavier than I started, and couldn’t take the weight off for ten long years.
I had dieted and exercised my way up to 190 pounds.
I was suddenly clinically obese at the height of five foot three.
My blood pressure and cholesterol had gone up, and doctors wanted to put me on meds.
I had to stop dieting and learn to eat “volumetrically”
Finally, I figured out what was holding me back, and learned how to enjoy eating as much food as I need, without binging on processed foods.
Once I had the missing pieces of the puzzle, I was able to lose 40 pounds in about four months. I improved my depression, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia symptoms on a plant-based whole-foods diet.

I’m not going to tell you that life is perfect because I was able to change my diet and lose weight.
But life is a lot better than it was. My depression, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia have all improved.
I wish I had known about food as medicine much sooner.
Doctors were not helping
Nutrition isn’t something the medical community puts much emphasis on. There are many decent studies on whole foods. But you have to be willing to dig.
I’m not a doctor or scientist. I’m just a person like you, who was tired of running in circles and taking meds that weren’t getting to the root cause of my health problems.
Learn from my mistakes
It didn’t happen for me overnight. I had to give up dieting, and learn to prepare and eat delicious, high-nutrient foods every day. It didn’t taste great at first. But within weeks I had adjusted to the new diet.
Processed-food-addiction along with caloric restriction was keeping me stuck in a cycle of cravings. I was so used to dieting that I didn’t understand the volume of food I needed to eat on a whole-foods plant-based diet.
